Precita Jazz Collective: Sunday Noon at Precita Park

The Precita Jazz Collective runs a free open jam at Precita Park every Sunday at noon — bring an instrument or just listen.

Every Sunday at noon, the Precita Jazz Collective sets up in Precita Park and plays. It’s free, it’s outdoors, and it’s open — bring an instrument and sit in, or just find a spot on the grass.

The collective is led by guitarist Daniel Dickison and bassist Philip Sossenheimer, both based in Bernal Heights. They’ve been doing this for years. The sessions are a real jam — not a performance with an audience rope line. Musicians cycle in and out. The repertoire runs jazz standards.

We brought our son and he loved it. He kept turning toward the music and bouncing along. There’s enough open grass nearby to let a toddler roam while you listen.

Precita Park itself is a small neighborhood park on the edge of the Mission and Bernal Heights. It has a playground, an open grass area, and a bocce court. It’s walkable from BART at 24th Street Mission — about 10 minutes south on Folsom, then left on Precita. If you want to extend the afternoon, Dolores Park is a 15-minute walk north and good for toddlers too.

The Sunday session typically goes well past noon. It was still going strong at 2:30pm when we stopped by.
