California Street Cable Car: The One Locals Actually Ride

The California Street line runs through Nob Hill with shorter waits and fewer tourists than the Powell lines. It costs $8 and goes through the good part of the hill.

The California Street cable car is the one that doesn’t get the postcards. The Powell lines (Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason) are what most visitors queue for at Union Square. California Street runs east-west through Nob Hill on its own and tends to be quieter.

San Francisco Municipal Railway cable car #52 on California Street at Nob Hill

This is car #52 on California Street. The route goes from the foot of California near the Financial District up through Nob Hill and over to Van Ness. Along the climb you pass the Fairmont, the Mark Hopkins, and the Pacific Union Club — the kind of buildings that make the hill feel like it earned its reputation.

Passengers riding on the side of a San Francisco cable car through Nob Hill

You can ride inside or hang off the side on the running board. Most people ride inside on a weekday afternoon. The gripman works the lever the whole way — no automation, same mechanism since the 1870s.

Interior of a San Francisco cable car with varnished wood paneling and bench seating

The interior holds up. Varnished wood ceiling, bench seating along the sides, everything painted the same deep red and yellow it has always been. The ride cost $8 each way in June 2026, on Clipper or in cash; the regular Muni fare did not apply.

If San Francisco is day zero before a coast drive, the Highway 1 guide starts where the cable-car trip ends.
