Aura at Grace Cathedral: Nob Hill Light Show Notes

Aura fills Grace Cathedral with ceiling projections and phone-controlled light, making an easy Nob Hill outing for families.

Aura at Grace Cathedral is a light projection show on the cathedral ceiling that runs about thirty minutes. We took our 20-month-old and it worked.

I’ve been to Grace Cathedral a lot. I used to live close to Nob Hill and walked past it regularly, going inside a few times, but I never bothered to look up at the ceiling. You go in, walk around, leave. This light show makes you sit in the pews and stare at the ceiling for thirty minutes straight.

The Show

Projectors light up the vaulted ceiling. Colors change—blues, oranges, pinks, greens. The Gothic arches become the canvas. Sometimes it looks like clouds. Sometimes warm glowing lights. Sometimes vibrant colors highlighting the stone details.

It runs on a loop. No beginning or end. You can arrive whenever, leave whenever.

The ceiling is beautiful. Gothic vaulting, ribbed arches, the way the stone curves. I’d walked under it dozens of times and never paid attention. The lights make you look.

Phone App

Download the app first (momentfactory.com). During the show, you send lights from your phone to the ceiling. Drag and drop colored particles on your screen. They appear as small lights on the actual cathedral ceiling above you.

Our toddler liked tapping the screen to make lights appear. Simple cause and effect. Everyone in the cathedral can do it at the same time. Hundreds of little lights going up.

With a 20-Month-Old

Thirty minutes is the limit for toddler attention span. This is exactly thirty minutes.

The cathedral has ambient lighting so it’s dark but not scary.

The phone app keeps small hands busy.

You can leave anytime since it’s a loop.

We went at 6 PM, not too late. If your toddler is already tired, they won’t care about ceiling lights.

Getting There

Grace Cathedral is on Nob Hill at the corner of California and Taylor. It’s a steep hill, so park nearby or take the California Street cable car.

[!IMPORTANT] Buy tickets online—they sell out on weekends. No strollers allowed inside.

It was raining when we went. Cathedral interior was comfortable. Nice to be inside while it rained.

No strollers inside—carry your toddler or let them walk.

Worth It

Yes, if your toddler has a decent attention span. The show is gentle enough for young kids.

No, if your toddler is in a no-sitting-still phase. You’ll wrestle them in the pew for thirty minutes.

For me, it made me look at a building I’d taken for granted. I’ve lived in San Francisco for years. Grace Cathedral was just there, famous and familiar. This made me actually see it. The ceiling is beautiful, and I never noticed.

We’d go again.
