Mission Kids Preschool, the Mission

Mission Kids is a preschool in the Mission, running a Reggio Emilia program for toddlers and preschool-age kids.

Mission Kids is a preschool in the Mission, running a Reggio Emilia program for toddlers and preschool-age kids. We visited on a Saturday morning to see the space.

Mission Kids outdoor courtyard — gravel lot with string lights and picnic tables, residential buildings behind, clear November morning

The entrance opens to a gravel courtyard with string lights and picnic tables. It’s an unusual feature for a Mission preschool — usable outdoor space that doesn’t feel like a parking lot afterthought.

Mission Kids main classroom — child-sized tables and chairs, colorful papel picado banners across the ceiling, shelves of materials and art supplies

The main classroom is bright and uncluttered. Papel picado runs across the ceiling. Shelves hold materials at child height — the Reggio approach emphasizes environment as a third teacher, and the room reflects that. No plastic primary colors everywhere.

Mission Kids lower level under the loft — exposed wooden beams, nature-themed wall, play kitchen, open floor space

The classroom splits across two levels. Under the loft is a lower zone with a play kitchen and nature-themed décor — more intimate than the main room above. The split layout gives different moods to different parts of the space.

Mission Kids book nook — picture books displayed face-out on low shelves, bins of books, soft rug

The book nook had picture books displayed face-out at toddler height. Our son went in and sat down and didn’t move. That’s usually a good sign.
