La Taqueria: Mission Street Burrito

La Taqueria has been at 24th and Mission since 1973. The line still runs out the door most evenings.

La Taqueria burrito — toasted pressed exterior in white paper wrapping, neon sign blurred in the background

The burrito comes without rice — more meat, less filler. They press and toast it on the griddle before wrapping, which gives the exterior a caramelized crust. It’s the thing that separates this from most Mission burritos.

La Taqueria neon sign and award wall — SF Chronicle framing, Zagat medal, Giants memorabilia, dozens of plaques

The award wall covers most of the back. FiveThirtyEight named it the best burrito in America in 2014. The SF Chronicle has covered it multiple times. The Giants plaque is there too. None of it seems to have changed the operation — same counter, same ordering system, same prices that remain reasonable for the neighborhood.

Cash is faster. The carnitas is the standard order. La Taqueria is one of many stops in our Mission District Guide.
