CPMC Birth Center Review: Rooms and Practical Notes
CPMC Birth Center on Van Ness has private rooms, partner space, new facilities, and a calmer hospital setup than expected.
We stayed at CPMC Birth Center on Van Ness. 1101 Van Ness Avenue, 5th floor. This is Sutter Health’s newest facility—opened March 2019. The building replaced their old Cathedral Hill campus. Everything is new.
Private rooms for labor, delivery, and recovery. You don’t move between rooms. You stay in one space the whole time. The room is big—actual furniture, couch for the partner, windows with city views. The four corner rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows. Panoramic views of the city. We didn’t get a corner room, but even the standard rooms are spacious.

Telemetry and Mobility
They use wireless telemetry monitoring. That means you’re not stuck in bed attached to wires. You can walk the hallway, move around the floor, labor however you want. The monitors track everything wirelessly. Makes a difference when you’re trying to manage contractions.
The doctors and nurses know what they’re doing. They’re calm, they explain things, they respond fast. There’s a bed in the room for the partner—not a chair, an actual bed. Matters more than you’d think during a long labor.

What We Brought
We brought a portable speaker and a diffuser. Piano music in the background, Japanese cypress scent in the air. Small details, but they help. The staff didn’t mind. They encourage you to make the space your own.
