Sen. Dianne Feinstein Returns Home to San Francisco

Sen. Dianne Feinstein was flown home to San Francisco Saturday evening rather than lying in state at the Capitol — a return to the city she led as mayor.

Senator Dianne Feinstein came home Saturday evening. She died at 90 in her Washington, D.C. residence, and rather than lying in state at the Capitol, her family had her flown back to the city she’d represented for over three decades.

A military flight landed at SFO at 5:58 p.m. Her granddaughter Eileen Mariano and Mayor London Breed were there on the tarmac to meet her. Her daughter Katherine came off the plane first, followed by Nancy Pelosi and her longtime chief of staff, James Sauls.

Feinstein served as San Francisco’s mayor before becoming the state’s senior senator, and colleagues from both parties spent the day praising her record fighting for California and the city specifically. She was one of the first women to hold a Senate seat from California and broke ground for women in elected office more broadly throughout her career. Fleet Week’s 2023 Air Show, scheduled for the following weekend, was dedicated to her memory.
