Cruise Robotaxi Service Under Scrutiny
CBS reports General Motors' self-driving robotaxi service, Cruise, is in the spotlight for the alleged cover-up of an accident in San Francisco.
CBS reports that Cruise, GM’s robotaxi service, allegedly covered up details of a San Francisco accident. California regulators may fine them $1.5 million. On October 2, a Cruise vehicle struck a pedestrian who had already been hit by another car.
The California Public Utilities Commission is investigating whether Cruise misled officials about what happened after the accident. The DMV already suspended Cruise’s operating permit. A February 6 evidentiary hearing is scheduled.
I wonder if they have found the actual car that hit the pedestrian as well. I hope that car gets found soon.
In the meantime, I’ll be riding a Waymo. The incident analysis raises harder questions about how autonomous vehicles should handle chaotic urban situations.
