The color is officially called International Orange — it looks red from a distance, but up close you can see the warm burnt-orange paint on every rivet. The bridge spans 1.7 miles across the Golden Gate strait and opened in 1937.
On foot, the bridge felt narrower than it looks from shore. The pedestrian walkway sits beside six lanes of traffic. Access rules and closing times change, so check the bridge’s current schedule before going.

[!TIP] Bring a jacket even in summer. The wind on the span is stronger than it feels at the parking lot.

City skyline and Bay Bridge to the east, Pacific to the west. The south end has bathrooms near the parking lot. The north end drops you at Vista Point in Marin; from there, Rodeo Beach is a short drive down Conzelman Road.
Apple Maps renders the bridge in 3D. It’s oddly satisfying to see how the digital model captures the cables and towers.

Walking was free. Vehicle tolls were electronic, with no cash booth, when this note was written in 2023.
