California Governor Veto Stalls Legalization of Certain
Newsom vetoes California psychedelics bill. Psilocybin and MDMA legalization blocked despite legislative support. What happens next.
Governor Newsom vetoed Senator Scott Weiner’s bill to legalize certain psychedelics in California. The bill had strong legislative support and was aimed at expanding treatment options for mental health conditions.
Senator Weiner, in his public statement, expressed that the veto is a “setback for the huge number of Californians – including combat veterans and first responders – who are safely using and benefiting from these non-addictive substances.” He further argued that criminalizing these substances serves to make people less safe and reduces access to help.
The bill would have legalized the possession, preparation, transfer, or transportation of specific quantities of substances like DMT, ibogaine, psilocybin, and psilocyn. These substances have been considered for their therapeutic benefits, particularly for conditions like depression and PTSD.
Looks like Governor Gavin Newsom is preparing to run for president.
