San Francisco renamed the planned Downtown Rail Extension The Portal in 2022; the tunnel would connect Caltrain to Salesforce Transit Center.
In September 2022, San Francisco’s planned Downtown Rail Extension was set to get a new name: The Portal.
The proposed tunnel would connect Caltrain—and eventually high-speed rail—at 4th and King to the unused train platforms beneath Salesforce Transit Center. The authority surveyed 400 voters along Bay Area transit corridors and found that only 12% were very familiar with the old DTX name. Source: SF Standard
The name was never the exciting part. I wanted the connection built.
