Mikkeller Bar San Francisco Shuts Its Doors in October

Mikkeller Bar in SF Tenderloin closed October 2022. Danish craft beer gastropub gone after years of rotating drafts from around the world.

Mikkeller Bar San Francisco closed in October 2022. The Danish craft beer gastropub sat on Mason Street in the Tenderloin, tucked into a neighborhood that’s had a rough few years for retail and restaurants.

What made it worth visiting was the rotating draft list — beers pulled in from breweries around the world, changing often enough that a repeat visit rarely meant drinking the same thing twice. The space itself went through a few redesigns over the years, but the quality of what was on tap stayed consistent the whole time.

Mikkeller still runs a location in San Diego’s Little Italy, and the SF bar had been one of three the brand operated in California before this closure. Losing it here fits a pattern the Tenderloin has seen play out repeatedly since the pandemic: a wave of closures that hit bars and restaurants harder than most other retail categories.

Anchor Brewing closed the following year, and that one hurt more given its history in the city. Local beer options keep shrinking.
