Central Subway opens in November
Central Subway soft opening announced for November 2022. New Muni line connecting Chinatown to Mission Bay.
Update: The Central Subway opened for full service in January 2023. It runs from Chinatown-Rose Pak Station to 4th & Brannan, with stops at Union Square and Yerba Buena/Moscone.
In September 2022, SFMTA announced a November soft opening for the long-delayed Central Subway.
The new line connects Chinatown to Mission Bay, adding four stations: Chinatown-Rose Pak, Union Square/Market Street, Yerba Buena/Moscone, and 4th & Brannan. This extends the T-Third line that previously ended at 4th & King.
Union Square station still requires exiting the fare gates to transfer to Powell Street BART. Disappointing, but expected given the station layouts.
[!NOTE] The Union Square station requires exiting fare gates to transfer to Powell Street BART—there’s no free in-station transfer.
Chinatown-Rose Pak is the first direct rail connection to SF Chinatown. The station is deep underground with art installations and escalators that take a while to ride.
The line is now running daily. It makes getting to Chinatown from the south side of the city much easier. From Mission BART stations, you can connect at Powell or transfer at 4th & King.
