San Francisco’s version of Hachiko

A bronze dog statue sits beside an abandoned blue suitcase on a Mission District sidewalk — an odd, oddly touching scene.

Bronze dog statue on sidewalk beside a blue carry-on suitcase in the Mission District

Walked past this on a regular block in the Mission and had to stop. A bronze dog statue sits on the sidewalk, and right next to it, a blue carry-on suitcase.

Nobody was around to claim either one. The pairing looked staged, like someone left a dog waiting outside a store the way Hachiko waited at Shibuya Station, except here the owner never showed and the suitcase stayed too.

I don’t know if the statue is a permanent fixture or something dropped off by a neighbor decorating the block. Either way, it’s the kind of small, unexplained scene that makes walking around the Mission worth it — you never know what’s on the next corner.
