London Breed Promised More Police and Safety Measures

In December 2021, Mayor London Breed proposed more policing, surveillance access, and restrictions on selling stolen goods.

Really about time—it saddens me to hear about car burglaries at popular tourist parking locations such as Lands End and Marina.

On December 14, 2021, Mayor London Breed announced proposals for more police patrols, real-time access to some surveillance video, and tighter restrictions on selling stolen goods. AP’s report also captured the disagreement: police commissioner John Hamasaki argued for services, treatment, and housing, while Tenderloin Housing Clinic director Randy Shaw said residents needed more patrols immediately.

I’m conflicted. Treatment is the long-term fix, and San Francisco needs it. But brazen store robberies and car burglaries are happening in broad daylight right now. That affects residents and tourists immediately. Trust in public spaces takes years to build, and we need to protect that too.
