Happy Día de Muertos

Día de Muertos festival in SF's Mission District. Day of the Dead celebration at Everett Middle School with altars, art, and local vendors.

Día de Muertos—Day of the Dead. It’s a Mexican celebration for remembering people who died, and the tone is celebratory rather than somber. If you’ve seen Coco, you get the idea. Just a day after Halloween in San Francisco, the Mission transforms into a cultural celebration. The Mission Block Party earlier in October showed how the neighborhood comes alive for festivals.

The Mission hosts a festival at Everett Middle School. Altars with marigolds, face painting, local artists selling stuff.

When: Saturday, October 30 2021 @ 01:00 PM TO 04:00 PM UTC-07:00

There’ll be booths from local artists and makers.

Each region in Mexico observes the day differently. Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, is known for a night-long cemetery vigil, while Oaxaca holds street parades and decorates its markets.

The Mission has other cultural events too—Cesar Chavez Day brings out the lowriders, and the block party fills the streets with music. After the festival, grab Oaxacan food or tacos nearby.
